How to Upscale Product Photos Without Losing Logos, Engravings or Fine Detail

A practical workflow for enlarging product photos while protecting logos, engravings, gemstones, edges and other SKU-critical details.

Upscaling a product photo sounds simple: make the file bigger and sharper. For ecommerce, that can be risky. Modern AI upscalers do not all behave the same way. Some are designed to preserve existing detail while increasing resolution. Others can generate new detail when the source is soft, compressed or too small.

That second approach can make a weak image look impressive, but it can also create information that was never captured by the camera. On a landscape, an invented texture may be harmless. On a product image, an invented engraving stroke, gemstone edge, chain link or label character can change what the buyer thinks they are buying.

First decide whether you need enlargement or reconstruction

Adobe's current Camera Raw Super Resolution workflow is a useful example of the more conservative end of upscaling. Adobe says it creates an enhanced image at twice the width and twice the height of the original, which means four times the total pixel count. It is especially useful for cropped images that need more resolution.

Photoshop's newer Generative Upscale gives users several choices. Adobe currently describes Topaz Gigapixel as the option that preserves existing detail, while Topaz Bloom adds new creative detail. Topaz's own Gigapixel documentation makes the same distinction more explicit: its core models aim to maintain the original image as much as possible, while the Redefine generative model is designed to add new detail and rebuild structure when information is missing or degraded.

For product photography, that distinction matters more than the headline resolution. If the source already contains the correct product information, start with the least generative method that gives you enough pixels for the destination.

Step 1: go back to the best original file

Do not upscale a screenshot, marketplace download or social-media copy if the original camera file still exists. Compression, previous sharpening and repeated resizing remove information before the upscaler even starts.

Use the highest-quality master you have. Make basic exposure, white-balance and lens corrections first, but keep an untouched copy beside it. That original remains the reference for product geometry, text, colour and surface detail throughout the rest of the workflow.

Step 2: try a modest upscale before a dramatic one

If a 1500-pixel product crop only needs to become a cleaner 3000-pixel asset, a 2x upscale is a sensible first test. There is little benefit in forcing a 4x or larger result simply because the software offers it.

Adobe's Super Resolution uses a fixed 2x linear increase. Photoshop's Generative Upscale offers 2x or 4x output. The right choice depends on where the image will be used, but product sellers should treat extra scale as something that needs justification. The more missing information an algorithm must compensate for, the more carefully the result should be checked.

Step 3: compare details, not just sharpness

An upscaled image can look sharper overall while becoming less accurate locally. Compare the result with the original at high zoom and inspect the details that identify the SKU.

For jewellery, check engraving strokes, hallmark shapes, clasp geometry, chain-link count and spacing, prongs, pavé rows, gemstone boundaries and the edge profile of the metal. For packaging, inspect every important word, logo edge, barcode area, dosage or quantity. For clothing, check stitching, logos, buttons, seams and pattern placement. For electronics, check ports, switches and printed markings.

Do not use an AI upscaler as a way to make unreadable text become readable. If the original does not contain enough information to verify a letter, any newly sharp letter is an inference. Photograph the label or engraving again if that detail matters commercially.

Step 4: use generative detail only where product truth is not at stake

Generative upscaling is not useless for ecommerce. It can be very effective on lifestyle backgrounds, fabrics behind the product, surfaces, props and campaign imagery where plausible detail is more important than exact SKU evidence.

It is also useful when the source is genuinely poor and there is no better file, as long as you understand what the output represents. Topaz describes Redefine as a model that can rebuild structure and add photorealistic detail when original information is missing. That is exactly why it deserves more caution on the product itself.

A sensible split is to preserve the product conservatively and allow more creative reconstruction around it. If your editor supports layers or masks, keep the approved SKU layer protected while improving a background separately rather than applying one aggressive generative pass to the whole image.

Jewellery is an especially difficult test

Jewellery contains many high-frequency details that an enhancer is tempted to sharpen or rebuild. Thin chain links can merge. A soft engraving can become a cleaner but different engraving. Pavé stones can become more regular than the real setting. A reflection along polished steel can be interpreted as a physical edge.

The safest jewellery workflow is therefore to keep a sharp real reference open while reviewing the upscale. Check structure first and visual polish second. If an upscale creates a more impressive gemstone but changes the prongs around it, reject it. If it makes a chain look cleaner by joining links that are separate in the real piece, reject it.

For Lustra Studio users creating new scenes, poses or colour variations, the same principle applies near the end of the workflow. Keep the original jewellery references as the source of truth, then upscale approved outputs only as much as the final channel requires. Upscaling should improve delivery quality, not become another opportunity to redesign the SKU.

A fast approval workflow

Keep the untouched master. Make one conservative upscale. Compare it side by side with the source. Inspect the small details that define the product. If the result passes, export it at the required size. If it does not, reduce the upscale strength, switch to a more preservation-focused model or return to a better source photograph.

Only use a more generative model when you are comfortable with it inferring missing information, and separate that work from SKU-critical regions whenever possible.

The practical rule

If a changed pixel could change what the buyer believes they are buying, the original product photograph is the authority. A faithful 2x image is more valuable than a spectacular 4x image with an invented label edge, stone, link or engraving stroke.

Upscaling is useful when it gives a good photograph more usable resolution. It becomes risky when it is expected to recover product facts the camera never captured. Preserve first, enlarge second, and generate new detail only where new detail is actually allowed.
