How to Upscale Product Photos Without Letting AI Invent Details
AI upscaling can rescue small product photos, but some models also invent texture and detail. Here is a safer ecommerce workflow for sharpening images while protecting product accuracy.
AI upscaling is useful when a product photo is sharp enough to keep but too small for a marketplace listing, advert or larger crop. The problem is that not every upscaler simply makes existing pixels clearer. Some generative modes actively add new texture and detail.
That can be harmless on a landscape. On a product image, especially jewellery, an invented edge, engraving stroke or surface texture can change what the customer thinks they are buying. The safest workflow is therefore not to choose the most dramatic enhancement. It is to use the least creative method that gets the image to the resolution you need.
Understand the difference between restoration and generation
Current tools increasingly separate conservative upscaling from creative upscaling. Adobe's Generative Upscale workflow, for example, offers Firefly Upscaler, Topaz Gigapixel and Topaz Bloom. Adobe describes Gigapixel as a model intended to preserve existing detail, while Bloom is designed to add new creative detail.
That distinction matters for ecommerce. If your source photograph already represents the product correctly, your goal is usually restoration: make the edges cleaner, reduce softness and increase usable resolution. You normally do not want the AI inventing richer metal texture, extra stitching or sharper decorative marks.
Adobe also notes that higher creativity settings in Topaz Bloom introduce more AI-enhanced detail and can deviate further from the original. That is useful for generated artwork. It is a warning sign for exact product photography.
Start with 2x before jumping to 4x
Adobe currently offers 2x and 4x scaling in Firefly's image upscaler. For a seller, 2x is a sensible first test because it asks the system to create less missing information. If a 1200-pixel image becomes 2400 pixels and that already covers your intended use, there is little reason to push it further.
Upscaling should solve a delivery problem, not become an automatic finishing step. A genuinely sharp 2000-pixel original often needs no generative enhancement at all for web use. Every extra AI pass creates another opportunity for subtle changes.
Choose a conservative model for real products
For a real product photo, start with an upscaler positioned around preservation rather than creativity. Adobe currently describes both Firefly Upscaler and Topaz Gigapixel as options for restoring low-resolution images, with Gigapixel specifically focused on preserving existing detail. Photoroom similarly positions its Image Enhancer around increasing resolution, clarity and sharpness for product photos while preserving important product details.
Those product descriptions are useful guidance, not a guarantee. The final image still needs to be compared with the original. AI enhancement can improve apparent sharpness even when the source never contained enough information to prove what a tiny detail should look like.
Jewellery needs a stricter inspection
Jewellery is particularly sensitive because small details carry product identity. After upscaling, inspect the clasp shape, engraving, chain connections, stone count, polished edges, surface scratches and reflections. A model may turn a soft engraved line into a crisp line that was never actually there, or make a blurred chain link look more regular than the real product.
Do not mistake visual confidence for factual accuracy. An AI upscaler is very good at producing something that looks plausible. Ecommerce photography requires something that looks like the actual SKU.
A practical safe-upscaling workflow
1. Keep the untouched original. Never overwrite the source photograph. You need it for side-by-side checking.
2. Crop and correct first. Fix obvious exposure, white balance and framing before upscaling so you are not enlarging problems you already know about.
3. Use the smallest scale that solves the job. Try 2x first. Only move to 4x when the final channel genuinely needs the extra pixels.
4. Keep creativity low. If the tool exposes a creativity or detail-generation control, use the conservative end for real products. In Adobe's current Bloom workflow, moving creativity higher explicitly increases deviation from the source.
5. Compare at 100 percent. Switch between the source and enhanced image at full size. Look at the product, not only the background or overall sharpness.
6. Reject invented details. If the new version has made a previously unclear product feature look specific, check that feature against another real photograph. If you cannot verify it, use the more conservative version.
Sometimes resizing is safer than generative upscaling
If your problem is aspect ratio rather than resolution, you may not need to upscale the product at all. Photoroom's current Resize tool can extend the surrounding image to fit a different format, and the company lists that utility as free and not requiring AI credits. That can be useful when turning one product photo into a square listing image, 4:5 advert or wider banner while keeping the product itself at its existing scale.
For ecommerce, preserving a correct product and generating extra background is often safer than asking AI to rebuild fine product detail simply to fill a larger canvas.

AI upscaling can turn an otherwise useful small product image into a sharper asset for listings and advertising, but the safest ecommerce workflow is intentionally conservative. Start with 2x, choose a preservation-focused model, keep creativity low and compare the result with the original at full size.
For jewellery, treat every newly sharpened clasp, engraving, stone and edge as something that still needs verification. Better resolution is useful. Invented product information is not.
