How to Remove Dust, Fingerprints and Scratches From Product Photos With AI

Dust, fingerprints and tiny marks become obvious in close-up ecommerce photos. Here is a practical AI retouching workflow that cleans the image without accidentally erasing real product detail.

A product can be photographed well and still look unfinished because of one fingerprint, a few dust specks or a tiny fibre caught on the surface. These defects become especially obvious in close-up ecommerce images of jewellery, watches, cosmetics, glass and glossy packaging.

AI retouching makes this kind of cleanup much faster. Current tools such as Adobe Firefly Generative Remove and Photoroom Retouch let you brush over a small unwanted area and have the surrounding pixels rebuilt automatically. The useful part for sellers is that you do not need to regenerate the entire product photo just to remove one distraction.

The risk is equally important: AI cannot always tell the difference between dirt and a legitimate product detail. A scratch may be damage, or it may be part of a brushed-metal finish. A dark mark may be dust, or it may be an engraving. The safest workflow is therefore local, conservative and reference-first.

Clean the product before asking AI to clean the photo

The cheapest retouch is the one you never need to make. Shopify's current 2026 product-photography guide specifically recommends removing dust and fingerprints before shooting because those small defects become easy to see in close-up ecommerce images. This matters even more for polished jewellery and glossy products, where fingerprints can catch the light.

Use a clean cloth, air blower or appropriate product-safe cleaning method before every angle. Then inspect the item again after repositioning it. If you touch a polished bracelet to rotate it, you may have added the fingerprint that appears in the next frame.

AI should be the cleanup pass for what escaped the shoot, not a substitute for basic product preparation. A cleaner source also means fewer parts of the actual product need to be regenerated during editing.

Use the smallest possible retouch area

Both Firefly and Photoroom now use brush-based local removal. You paint over the unwanted element, and the system redraws that selected area from the surrounding context. This is exactly the kind of AI editing that suits product cleanup because the rest of the image can remain untouched.

Keep the brush just large enough to cover the defect. If there is one dust spot on a pendant, do not brush over half the pendant. If one fibre is sitting beside a ring, select the fibre rather than the entire background around it.

A smaller selection gives the model less legitimate product information to reinterpret. It also makes the result easier to inspect because you know exactly where the edit happened.

Separate temporary defects from real product texture

Before removing anything, classify it. Dust, loose fibres, fingerprints, accidental smudges and marks on the background are usually safe cleanup targets. Product texture, engraving, brushed grain, seams, stone inclusions, intentional patina and manufacturing details are different. They describe the item the customer may receive.

This distinction matters for jewellery. A polished steel bracelet may have tiny real hairline marks. Removing every one can make the metal look unrealistically perfect. A brushed finish may contain directional texture that looks like fine scratches at high zoom. If AI smooths that texture into a mirror finish, the photo is cleaner but the product is less accurate.

When you are unsure, keep the untouched original open beside the edited image. If the mark exists on the physical item rather than only in the photograph, think carefully before deleting it.

Be especially careful with reflections

Reflective products create a special problem because some reflections are distractions while others are what make the material look real. Shopify's current product-photography guidance notes that jewellery, glass and metallic products reflect the camera, lights and room, and recommends controlling those reflections during the shoot with light tents or white cards.

If a polished bracelet clearly reflects the photographer or a dark camera shape, a small local repair may improve the image. But do not remove every highlight and reflection from the metal. Polished surfaces need light transitions to show shape and finish. Flattening them can make silver look like grey plastic.

For difficult reflective products, fixing the lighting setup is often safer than repeatedly asking AI to repaint large sections of the product surface.

A practical six-step cleanup workflow

1. Keep the untouched source. Never overwrite the original photograph. It is your reference for product colour, texture, engraving and geometry.

2. Inspect at 100 percent. Mark only obvious temporary defects: dust, lint, fingerprints, accidental smudges and background distractions.

3. Retouch one defect at a time. In Photoroom Retouch or Firefly Generative Remove, use a small brush and let the tool rebuild the smallest necessary area.

4. Compare immediately. Toggle between the edited version and the original. Check whether the cleanup changed an edge, engraving, stone, texture or reflection nearby.

5. Leave uncertain details alone. If you cannot tell whether a fine line is dust, damage or genuine surface texture, verify it against the physical product or another real photograph before removing it.

6. Review at normal shopping size. After the full-size inspection, view the image at roughly the size a customer will see it on a phone. The photo should look clean without looking unnaturally airbrushed.

Photoroom Retouch vs Firefly Generative Remove

Photoroom's current Retouch tool is available on iOS, Android and the web and is listed as a free utility that does not use AI credits. Its Erase mode is straightforward for small ecommerce cleanup jobs: brush over the unwanted area and let the tool redraw it.

Adobe Firefly's Generative Remove follows a similar local workflow. Adobe describes it as a non-destructive way to select specific areas and remove unwanted elements while using the surrounding image to create the replacement. Adobe also explicitly lists tidying product photos as one use case.

The important choice is not which logo is on the editor. For product photography, choose the tool that lets you make a precise local selection, compare against the original and undo quickly when the generated repair changes something real.

Where this fits into an AI product-photography workflow

Cleanup should happen before you multiply one source image into many assets. If you plan to use a product photograph for background generation, model images, colour variations or listing creatives, first make sure the source itself does not contain obvious fingerprints or dust that will be carried into later versions.

Clean the real product first, retouch the smallest possible area, keep legitimate texture and reflections, and compare every repair with the original. The goal is not to make the item perfectly smooth. It is to remove photographic distractions without removing information about the product itself.
