Keep Packaging Text Editable in a Photopea Mockup
Build a reusable packaging mockup in free Photopea, with editable label artwork, correct perspective and real reflections instead of AI-generated text.
AI image editors can create an attractive product scene and still ruin the part a customer reads. Ingredient lines change, a logo gains a letter, a size becomes unclear or the model invents a claim that was never on the pack.
A safer workflow is to treat the package photograph and the label artwork as separate assets. Use AI for the scene only when it helps, then place the approved label manually as an editable Smart Object. Photopea can do this in a browser, and its core editing workflow is free to use.
The result is a reusable mockup rather than a flattened AI guess. When the product name, variant or legal copy changes, you update the source artwork and keep the placement, perspective and masking.
1. Start with an honest base image
Choose a sharp photograph of the real box, bottle, jar or pouch. A front-facing pack is easiest, but an angled view can work if the label surface is clearly visible. Avoid using a heavily compressed marketplace thumbnail because small text and edges will already be damaged.
If you use an AI-generated background, keep the real package itself as a cutout or composite. Do not ask the generator to reconstruct the packaging from memory. The base must preserve the actual shape, cap, seams, proportions and material.
Open the base in Photopea and save it as a PSD immediately. Keep the original photo as the bottom layer and do not paint the new label directly onto it.
2. Prepare the label at the correct ratio
Build the label in a separate document using the approved logo, product name, colour, required copy and barcode only if it will remain large enough to verify. Match the artwork’s width-to-height ratio to the physical label. A 60 by 40 millimetre label and a 3 by 2 digital canvas share the same ratio.
Keep type as text layers and logos as vector or high-resolution assets for as long as possible. AI-generated lettering should not be the master. If the only artwork available is a small screenshot, recover the original file before making the mockup.
Group the label layers, then convert the group to a Smart Object. Photopea stores the source separately, so scaling the placed label down and up does not discard the original image data in the way repeated raster resizing can.
3. Match a flat package with perspective
Drag the Smart Object into the package document and choose Edit, Free Transform. For a box or flat pouch, hold Ctrl while dragging individual corners until the artwork follows the four visible corners of the label area. Photopea’s perspective transform lets the near edge appear wider and the far edge narrower.
Do not align only the outer rectangle. Check that horizontal text lines follow the package’s own horizontal direction and that vertical elements lean with the box. If the result looks like a sticker floating above the photograph, the perspective is usually slightly wrong.
Keep the label inside the real printable area. Leave space around folds, crimped pouch edges, box corners and seams. A perfectly centred digital label can still be physically impossible if it crosses a construction detail.
4. Use Warp for bottles and jars
A perspective transform is suitable for a flat plane. A cylindrical bottle needs curvature. With Free Transform active, select Warp and bend the label so its side edges wrap away from the viewer while the centre remains fuller.
Use small movements. Extreme warping can make letters different widths across the same word. Compare the result with the curvature of any existing seam, highlight or printed line on the container.
For a transparent, tapered or strongly reflective bottle, a simple warp may not be convincing enough. The mockup can still be useful for layout approval, but final listing imagery may require a real printed sample or a more advanced displacement workflow.
5. Put reflections and occlusions back on top
A real label sits under the scene’s lighting. If the placed artwork covers every highlight, the pack will look flat. Duplicate the original package layer, move the duplicate above the label and add a raster mask. Paint the mask so only genuine highlights, edge shadows or foreground details show over the artwork.
Photopea masks hide pixels without deleting them. Black conceals a layer, white reveals it and grey creates partial transparency. This makes it possible to restore a bottle highlight, a pouch crease or a finger crossing the label while keeping the underlying artwork editable.
Use a soft brush and low opacity around gradual reflections. Keep hard masks for real physical boundaries such as a cap edge or folded seam. Avoid inventing strong gloss that is not present in the base photograph.
6. Make the template reusable
Name the layers clearly: base photo, label Smart Object, surface highlights, edge shadows and output guides. Save the PSD before exporting a JPEG or PNG.
To update the label, double-click the Smart Object thumbnail. Photopea opens its source as a separate document. Replace the approved artwork, choose File, Save, and return to the package document. Every linked copy of that Smart Object updates automatically while retaining its own position and transformation.
That linked behaviour is useful when the same label appears in several places in one composition. It can be risky when you need different variants in the same document, because editing the shared source changes them all. Use separate source objects or separate PSD templates for genuinely different SKUs.
7. Export and run a listing check
Export at the final channel size, then inspect the result at 100%. Read every visible word. Compare the logo, variant name, quantity, colour and label layout with the approved packaging file. Check that the mockup has not hidden required copy behind a curve or crop.
Also compare the mockup with the product customers will receive. A design preview can be useful for internal approval or a campaign concept, but it should not imply a printed finish, foil effect, texture or label position that the manufactured product does not have.
Keep the layered PSD as the master. Exported files are delivery assets, not the editable source. If an AI background is replaced later, reuse the verified package and label layers rather than asking the model to redraw the SKU.
Where AI still fits
AI can help generate a neutral environment, extend a background or explore campaign directions around the product. The label should remain outside that generative step whenever exact text and brand geometry matter.
This division of labour is simple: the model creates atmosphere, while the Smart Object carries product truth. It is slower than accepting the first generated pack, but much faster than repairing a different spelling, logo and ingredient line in every new image.
