How to Make AI Product Backgrounds Look Real: Match Lighting and Shadows
AI background replacement often fails because the product and scene look like two separate images. Here is a practical workflow for matching lighting, shadows and perspective so ecommerce photos feel more realistic.
Replacing a product background with AI is easy. Making the result look like the product was actually photographed in that scene is harder.
The usual problem is not the background itself. It is the mismatch between the product and the new environment. The background may show soft window light from the left while the product still carries a hard studio highlight from the right. The surface may look matte while the product has no contact shadow. The perspective may suggest a low camera angle even though the product was photographed from above.
Current AI product-photo tools are starting to address this directly. Photoroom's current AI Scenes workflow can generate a new background while relighting the foreground, and its AI Shadows tool can control shadow hardness, intensity, direction, spread and product orientation. Adobe's Object Composites workflow similarly describes blending uploaded products into generated scenes with matching tones, lighting, shadows and textures.
Start with the product angle, not the background
Before generating a scene, look at the camera angle of the real product photo. If the product was photographed almost straight on, create a scene that also makes sense from roughly that viewpoint. If it is a top-down flat lay, build a flat-lay environment rather than asking the AI to place it on a table viewed from eye level.
This one decision removes a lot of the artificial look. Perspective is difficult to hide. A bracelet photographed from above cannot convincingly sit on a pedestal viewed from the side unless the model also changes the bracelet itself, which creates a new risk of altering the product.
For ecommerce work, preserving an accurate product is usually more important than forcing a dramatic composition. Choose a scene that works with the source image whenever possible.
Match the direction of the light
Next, identify the strongest light on the product. Look at highlights and darker edges. If the left side of a polished bracelet is brighter, the original light probably came from the left. Your generated scene should follow the same logic.
A simple prompt can state: "Soft window light from the left, with gentle falloff to the right." That is more useful than asking for "beautiful luxury lighting" because it gives the model a physical direction to follow.
If the tool supports foreground relighting, use it cautiously. Photoroom says AI Scenes can relight the foreground when building a new environment. That can help the product sit more naturally inside the scene, but jewellery still needs inspection because changing highlights can also change how polished metal, edges and stones appear.
Use the shadow to connect the product to the surface
A missing or incorrect shadow is one of the fastest ways to make a product look pasted into a background. The shadow tells the viewer where the product sits, how high it is above the surface and where the light is coming from.
For soft studio or window light, start with a light, diffused shadow. For a harder directional light, the shadow can be darker and more defined. The direction should be opposite the main light source. If the light comes from the upper left, the shadow should generally move toward the lower right.
Photoroom's current AI Shadows controls make this unusually explicit. Advanced settings can adjust shadow hardness, intensity, direction and spread, and can tell the system whether the product is upright or lying flat. The basic presets also include soft, hard and floating shadows.
For jewellery flat lays, the flat orientation is especially useful because the shadow should normally sit around the product rather than falling beneath it like a standing bottle.
Keep reflections consistent with the new scene
Reflective products create another problem. Metal, glass and glossy packaging partly show the environment around them. If a silver bracelet was originally photographed inside a white light tent, it may contain large white reflections. Putting that exact cutout into a dark green room can feel wrong because the metal is still reflecting a bright white studio.
AI relighting can sometimes reduce the mismatch, but do not ask the system to completely rebuild the metal unless necessary. The more of the product surface it regenerates, the more opportunity it has to change engraving, edges, stone settings or fine geometry.
A safer approach is to choose new scenes whose lighting is reasonably compatible with the source photo. Soft neutral environments are easier to blend with typical studio product images than highly coloured neon scenes.
A practical background-replacement workflow
1. Choose the cleanest real product image. Use a sharp image where the edges, clasp, stones, engraving and surface finish are easy to inspect.
2. Build a scene around the existing viewpoint. Do not force a major camera-angle change unless you are willing to regenerate the product as well.
3. State the light direction. Describe where the key light comes from and whether it is soft or hard.
4. Add or correct the contact shadow. Match its direction and softness to the light, and make sure it suits whether the product is standing or lying flat.
5. Inspect reflections and edges. Look for bright halos from poor background removal, old studio reflections that conflict with the new scene, and shadows that begin in the wrong place.
6. Compare the product with the original. The final check is still product accuracy. A realistic composite is not useful if the AI has changed what the customer will actually receive.
Where this matters most for jewellery
Jewellery makes compositing difficult because polished metal, small contact points and fine details expose mistakes quickly. A bracelet can look like it is floating if the shadow does not touch the correct links. A pendant can look too heavy if the shadow is too dark. A ring can appear plastic if the model smooths away its sharp reflections.
